The Institute of Arctic Biology and the Department of Biology and Wildlife at the University of Alaska Fairbanks invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in microbiology at the Assistant Professor level. Applicants must possess a Ph.D. in the biological sciences or a related field and postdoctoral research experience. Teaching experience, a record of extramural funding, and evidence of the ability to supervise graduate students and collaborate with fellow faculty are preferred.
Outstanding applicants with research focusing on any or all microbial taxa (e.g. bacteria, archaea, fungi, other eukaryotes, and viruses) are welcome. Candidates conducting microbial research using metagenomics, transcriptomics and/or other advanced –omics approaches are particularly encouraged to apply. Research areas of interest include, but are not limited to, microbial ecology of ecosystems (including biogeochemical cycling, plant-microbe interactions, soil, stream and permafrost microbial ecology), host-associated microbiomes (of plants, wildlife, humans, etc.), infectious diseases (of humans, wildlife, etc.), and environmental health (e.g., contaminants and pathogens in the environment).
Teaching responsibilities will involve teaching two one-semester courses per year at the graduate or undergraduate level, including general microbiology and other topics within the candidate’s expertise area. The successful candidate should be able to secure extramural funding and develop a successful research program and effectively mentor graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.
The new faculty member will have the opportunity to interact and collaborate with faculty members studying a diverse array of topics in the Institute of Arctic Biology, Department of Biology and Wildlife, and many other departments and institutes within UAF and across the University of Alaska system. Alaska INBRE offers many opportunities for intramural support through pilot awards, student fellowships, and travel grants for biomedical and environmental health research. Faculty also benefit from cross-cutting research programs such as NSF’s LTER and EPSCoR programs and have opportunities to collaborate with colleagues from numerous state and federal health, land, wildlife, and fisheries management agencies. Particular strengths are high-latitude ecology, evolutionary biology, wildlife biology, physiology, and Alaska Native Health Research. Numerous field stations, research centers, and laboratory facilities are available, including Bonanza Creek LTER, Toolik Field Station and Arctic LTER, two NEON sites, The IAB Genomics Core Laboratory (which includes a MiSeq and array of instrumentation for genomic and chemical analyses; https://sites.google.com/alaska.edu/genomicscorelab/home), Research Computing Systems (RCS) High Performance Computing (HPC), the R.G. White Large Animal Research Station, Center for Alaska Native Health Research, Animal Quarters, Spatial Ecology Laboratory, Alaska Geobotany Center, and University of Alaska Museum.
