The UAA College of Health, Medical Laboratory Science Department is searching for a Term Assistant Professor of Medical Laboratory Science. This position is responsible for teaching Medical Laboratory Science courses. This position plays a key role in maintaining community partnerships, ensuring students meet learning outcomes, and meeting accreditation standards.
100 Responsible for theoretical and practical instruction in any of the following areas as needed by the department: phlebotomy and specimen processing, basic techniques in laboratory medicine and immunology, among other potential courses. Teach up to 24-27 workload units per 9 month contract; courses may be delivered as face-to-face, online or hybrid. Contribute to the improvement of the department, college, university, and community through active involvement in committee work. Maintain office hours according to contractual guidelines. Write and update course syllabi, and assist with curriculum review, revision, and development. Maintain departmental integrity of student records. Maintain program learning outcomes, assessment, and curriculum. Coordinate/enforce national accreditation requirements and standards. Engage in professional development in the field of medical laboratory science, adult education, and online instruction. Attend department meetings and engage in continuous quality improvement. Work effectively and collaboratively within the scope of the University of Alaska mission with a diverse student population and university staff. Oversee students for clinical rotations, including rescheduling when necessary. Provide instructions for laboratory coordinator and monitor student activity during lab sessions to ensure a safe work environment and assess competency in performing procedures. Ability to teach using various methods to engage students in learning, such as lecture presentations, group interactions, Blackboard applications, research, and the ability to teach using online modalities such a Collaborate.
Interpersonal skills necessary to deal effectively and professionally with students, faculty, staff, and the public.
Ability to work effectively in a faculty team.
Demonstration of commitment to ongoing professional development required.
Required Experience:Minimum of 3 years of clinical laboratory experience as a Medical Laboratory Scientist.
Active involvement and leadership in state and/or national organizations preferred.
Experience in building and maintaining community partnerships preferred.
Three years teaching in a Medical Laboratory Science/Medical Laboratory Technology education program, knowledge of web-based course design and delivery, and knowledge of rural health care systems preferred.
A Bachelor of Science in Clinical/Medical Laboratory Science or a related field is required.
National certification (generalist) as a Medical Laboratory Scientist/Medical Technologist is also required.
