Position Summary:

The Health Information Management (HIM) Associate of Applied Science degree program at the University of Alaska Southeast was implemented in 1992 and has been nationally accredited since its first survey in 1994. The program is delivered by e-learning and is seeking a creative, self-motivated and collaborative person to manage and expand the HIM program. The position is a full-time, tenure track position in Sitka, Alaska beginning August 12, 2018, or sooner depending on applicant availability. Appointment will be at the assistant or associate professor level depending upon education and experience. Faculty member will be responsible for HIM Program management, undergraduate teaching, advising, and recruiting activities within the University of Alaska Southeast Associate of Applied Science degree in Health Information Management. Teaching responsibilities will be primarily web-based synchronous and asynchronous course delivery, plus face-to-face non-credit professional development training as demand warrants. For example offering continuing education courses in current HIM topics of interest to HIM professionals. Successful applicant must relocate/reside in Sitka, Alaska.

Duties:

1001) Support University of Alaska bipartite mission of performing teaching and public service. Teach undergraduate courses primarily by e-learning using various delivery techniques. Candidate must be able to teach, in a manner consistent with the specific course content description, in two or more of the following course areas: coding, legal, management, healthcare information technology, or billing and reimbursement. Faculty is expected to hold office hours appropriate for the course(s) being taught. Mentor and advise students. Be proactive in modifying and developing curriculum in support of e-Learning delivery of program courses. Maintain program accreditation by maintaining CAHIIM standards. Develop, implement, and conduct assessment on program and course student learning outcomes as required by the university, governmental and accrediting agencies. Participate in orientation, graduation and other major academic and university events. Create review and revise curriculum, program materials, and student and faculty resources. Maintain professional certifications and stay current in areas of assignment to include advances in instructional technology. 2) Provide University and Community service. Perform regular public service. Participate in university/departmental governance and activities.Essential

Required

  • Experience teaching a range of HIM courses.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge of instructional design principles and best practices in course design and delivery
  • Ability to maintain program accreditation
  • Ability to advocate for the university

Preferred

  • Master's degree preferred
  • Experience interpreting student needs to produce effective instructional, interactive, course materials
  • Post-secondary instruction and course administration experience as the instructor of record, teaching HIM courses or health information technology courses or career training, continuing education or professional development training experience
  • Ability to work effectively with nontraditional, ethnically diverse, and under prepared students
  • Knowledge of and an ability to integrate instructional technology in the classroom
  • Experience in health information technology, information security, database or system administration, or related field
  • Experience teaching blended, hybrid or fully online courses in a higher education environment
  • Professional experience in a management-related position in the healthcare industry
  • Experience working with Electronic Health Records
  • Demonstrated proficiency using computer applications, online resources, and other technologies for the classroom

Required Experience

Two years full-time or equivalent, post-secondary teaching experience

Education or Training Required

  • Baccalaureate degree in HIM or closely related area (health information, health services administration, business, computer science, education, or other health-related area)
  • At least 3 years’ experience working in HIM
  • Currently Credentialed as a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT)
