Position Summary:

The Sun Star is your newspaper, a student-run media outlet that reports on current events and UAF campus life from the student perspective. Join our staff for the 2018-19 academic year! Journalism students looking for real experience are especially invited to apply.

Duties:

Managing Editor

The Managing Editor of the Sun Star is responsible for overseeing staff and editorial workflow, and handles grammatical and AP style edits for each article submitted to the Sun Star.

The Managing Editor works with the Web Editor, Multimedia Editor, Editor-in-Chief, and Staff and freelance reporters to prepare stories for periodic web publication. They edit articles and captions as submitted, and offer advice and guidance to freelancers and staff working on stories. The Managing Editor may be required to contribute content in the form of columns, editorials, or news articles at the discretion of the Editor-in-Chief.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Experience with journalistic and news writing.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Excellent communication skills.

  • Ability to maintain workflow operations and relationships.

  • Ability to work independently and as a team.

  • Capable of answering inquiring emails and advertising inquiries.

  • Comfortable with technology.

  • Comfortable editing work as submitted from a variety of skill levels.

  • Ability to take edits and critiques to heart without taking them personally.

Preferred knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Comfortable working on strict deadline.

  • Experience coordinating or managing workers or volunteers.

  • Familiarity with workflow management systems.

  • Knowledge of AP style.


Multimedia Editor

The Multimedia Editor of the Sun Star is a multi-faceted position, responsible for managing the Sun Star’s social media accounts and designing/editing visual media for timely web publication.  The Multimedia Editor is responsible for designing in-house advertisements, flyers, and infographics as needed. This position also requires strong knowledge of Adobe PhotoShop, video editing, and general understanding of design and artistic principles such as color theory, typography, and visual hierarchy.  The Multimedia Editor further maintains the newspaper’s social media presence, cultivates our following and engages with readers as necessary.

The Multimedia Editor works with the Web Editor, Managing Editor, Editor-in-Chief, and Staff and freelance reporters to prepare stories for periodic web publication. They uphold Sun Star branding guidelines and are responsible for maintaining a consistent, distinctive brand. The Multimedia Editor may be required to contribute content in the form of columns, editorials, or news articles at the discretion of the Editor-in-Chief.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite.

  • Familiarity with audio and video recording and editing.

  • Excellent communication skills.

  • Knowledge of DSLR camera settings and lenses.

  • Knowledge of what makes a compelling photo.

  • Familiarity with social media platforms including (but not limited to) Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.

  • Ability to work independently and as a team.

  • Ability to take edits and critiques to heart without taking them personally.

Preferred knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Comfortable working on strict deadline.

  • Attention to detail.

  • Experience with graphic design and computer art is a plus.

  • Familiarity with workflow management systems.


Staff Reporter

Staff reporters at the Sun Star write consistent weekly stories for the website, seeking out and reporting on events in a specific area of focus (science, sports, arts and entertainment, etc) with other assignments at the discretion of the Editor-in-Chief.

Staff reporters hold themselves to a high standard of accuracy and quality in reporting, with careful citation of sources and quoting of interviews. They are required to record any and all interviews. They are willing to learn the nuances of journalistic writing, and conform to AP and Sun Star style guidelines in their articles. Reporters may be asked to provide assistance to freelance reporters, including edits as dictated by the workflow. They are also willing to take photos as specific assignments require.

Staff reporters are expected to write at least one in-depth investigative and/or feature piece per semester at the discretion of the editor.

  • Experience performing independent research and investigation.

  • Experience writing in journalistic style.

  • Experience operating DSLR cameras.

  • Familiarity with workflow management systems.


Web Editor

The Web Editor is responsible for posting content to and upkeeping the Sun Star website, as well as any of the associated social media sites. They are expected to implement new web-based systems as necessary and install new office computer systems when applicable. The Web Editor also maintains communication with the Managing Editor in order to maintain an up to date posting schedule as well as maintain online advertising. They are responsible for organizing and updating the Sun Star archives.  They work with the Multimedia Editor to ensure that the Sun Star’s presence across social media platforms is working efficiently.


The Web Editor is responsible for troubleshooting issues with our office technology, and assisting newspaper staff and freelancers with operation of our web and office systems and handling the issues brought to them by the non-tech savvy staff. The Web Editor may be required to contribute content in the form of columns, editorials, or news articles at the discretion of the Editor-in-Chief.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Knowledge of web hosting and content management systems.

  • Experience troubleshooting small office computer systems and equipment.

  • Ability to work independently and as a team.

  • Ability to take edits and critiques to heart without taking them personally.

Preferred knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Experience with web and mobile development preferred.

  • Experience delivering multimedia via YouTube, RSS feeds, Facebook / Twitter posts, and other online distribution mechanisms.

  • Familiarity with workflow management systems.
