Position Summary:

This is a circulation technician position providing desk support at the Consortium Library at UAA.

Duties:

75Provides circulation support which includes but is not limited to opening and closing the library, charging and discharging library materials to patrons using the library''s automated circulation system, issuing library cards, renewing items for patrons, assisting patrons in locating materials, processing items for distribution to other libraries in the system. Provides general information to patrons regarding library policies, directions, general campus information and assistance with library copy machines.Essential

The UAA/APU Consortium Library supports the educational and research programs of the University of Alaska Anchorage and Alaska Pacific University as well as serving as a major research library for Southcentral Alaska.

The Circulation Department at the Consortium Library is responsible for the maintenance of the collection for public access, circulation materials into and out of the library, and providing a first point of contact for general patron questions.

Circulation workers perform a variety of tasks necessary to circulate and manage the collections at the library. They are responsible for opening and closing the library, checking materials in and out of the library, collecting fines on overdue materials. In addition circulation workers provide a wide series of services aimed at helping patrons with general library services.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:  Attention to detail, accuracy, basic computer skills, communication, interpersonal skills, organization skills. Ability to communicate effectively in writing. Basic computer skills e.f. MS Word, Internet, email. Experience w/library computer systems. Customer service experience. Cash register experience.

Education:  High school diploma or equivalent because moderate math and English language skills are essential to this position for organizing materials, discernment of discrepancies in records and understanding of library bibliographic standards.
