Position Summary:

The Geophysical Institute is seeking a highly motivated, detail-oriented individual ready to take on multifaceted and exciting work. The successful candidate must have excellent customer service skills, attention to detail, ability and willingness to learn, and a positive attitude. We are looking for someone to develop and maintain websites for UAF science research and outreach programs. The successful candidate will work within content management systems as well as other Web environments. Develop and maintain databases to automate data represented on websites, and work with graphic designers and other creative professionals to provide visually appealing responsive sites.


10Participate in and/or provide ongoing training and development: Sustain current knowledge base of constantly advancing web authoring tools and standards, intelligent and responsive design concepts. Engage in training opportunities (within budget and scope of department) to stay current with emerging technology. Provide training and expertise to clients and other users as needed. Participate in user''s groups and other communities that support the advancement UAF and department website-related interests.Essential
10Perform other tasks as assigned: Support basic Design Services department functions, such as customer service, printing posters, and sharing in materials production and event support. Provide maintenance support for department technology, such as printers, media readers, input and output devices and other peripherals. Assist department staff with basic IT needs. Supervise students if necessary.Essential
10Perform troubleshooting, design support, assessment, consulting and cost estimating in support of GI and related websites: Assist department staff in identifying and resolving technology issues. Advise designers on the suitability of design solutions for web application Follow industry hardware and software releases to determine when upgrades are advantageous. Assess cost effectiveness and efficiency of new technologies and/or suitability of new features being considered for websites. Provide consultation to clients on plans for new website development or existing website revisions. Perform research on proposed projects, consult with other IT staff within the department/system, and develop accurate, itemized cost estimates.Essential
20Perform programming and development of apps, interactive databases, multimedia interfaces, and other IT solutions as needed for the UAF departments, programs, and projects.Essential
50Programming, development, and maintenance of websites: Conduct user research and develop customized solutions for targeted audiences. Develop and maintain Website maps and technical documentation for GI and associated sites. Develop, implement, and maintain sites within CMS and other Web environments. Mediate with web server administrators to establish and configure new sites. Establish and register marketable domain names. Maintain domain name certifications and domain contracts. Develop, implement, and maintain databases to automate certain types of data represented on websites. Perform routine maintenance, content updates, optimization. Assist with development of written, audio and video material for website distribution. Work with graphic designers to ensure sites have a contemporary, visually appealing appearance. Ensure sites are compliant with current UAF and department website and branding guidelines. Create templates and other tools for rapid response to website needs.Essential

Work is performed within the Geophysical Institute's Design Services department and is term-funded based on the availability of grant funds. GI Design Services performs work for other UAF units, especially research institutes. In addition to website development, this position will work closely with the GI Research Computing Systems department, which provides web hosting and IT services in support of research activities.  


Successful applicants will have:

General working knowledge of data processing functions, computer system operations and information technologies (including hardware and software).

The ability to operate personal computers and related equipment.

The ability to provide training support and customer service.

Knowledge of Mac and PC platforms, diagnostic utilities, and operation and troubleshooting methodologies for relevant applications.

Problem-solving skills for data processing functions and computer system operations.

Strong organization and communication skills.

The ability to write clearly and accurately, spell and punctuate properly.

The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with individuals and groups and to work successfully as a member of a team.

The ability to perform basic layout and publishing tasks using Adobe products.

Advanced knowledge of Drupal and other content management systems.

The ability to work within GitHub. Knowledge of Google applications, and Google Sites.

Programming languages: HTML, HTML5, PHP, CSS, CSS3, Javascript, MySQL.

Salary Information:

This position is a full-time, non-exempt, term-funded, Grade 79 with salary commensurate with experience

Non-Represented Staff (Probationary Period):

Pursuant to University Regulation 04.07.020, new employees of the University are employed in an at-will probationary status for the first six months of employment.   During the probationary period, employment may be terminated for no reason or any reason.  Promoted employees also serve a probationary period with limited rights of retreat.

Term Positions:

This position is a term-funded position through June 30, 2018, and is reviewed annually for contract renewal at the University's discretion.
