Duties:

The Vice Provost for Analysis and Planning (VPAP) supports the University's leadership by providing objective, accurate, and timely information, analysis, and advice to inform planning, decision-making and resource allocation processes. The VPAP collaborates with the campus community to identify information needs; leads institutional research staff in collecting, managing, and presenting data; provides analysis; develops predictive models; and disseminates clear and accurate findings that guide effective action. 

The position:

  • Reports directly to the Provost
  • Leads UAF Planning, Analysis and Institutional Research (PAIR) and supervises its staff.
    • Directly supervises a staff of five or more (as resources permit). 
  • Oversees externally mandated accountability reporting.
  • With PAIR staff, further develop (or select for purchase) automated data reporting and presentation tools, to reduce staff effort in producing routine reports and to provide ready access for data users.
  • Is a member of Provost’s Council and Chancellor’s Cabinet.
  • Collaborates with senior administrators to identify data and information needs:
    • Collaborates with the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, Director of Admissions, Vice Chancellor for Rural, Community and Native Education, and Deans to develop and use data analytics to inform student recruiting.
    • Collaborates with the Vice Provost and Dean of General Studies, Vice Chancellor for Rural, Community and Native Education, and Deans to develop and use data analytics to inform student retention and completion programs.
    • Collaborates with the Vice Chancellor for research to develop and use data analytics to inform strategies to increase external support of research.
  • With assistance of PAIR staff, monitors external data resources and uses available data for benchmarking, predictive modeling, and other applications.  Acquires (if PAIR budget permits) or recommends the acquisition of needed proprietary data.
  • Participates in all major planning efforts, such as UAF Strategic Planning and Strategic Enrollment Management Planning.  Identifies and provides information, and analysis to inform planning; advises on goals and strategies; identifies (in consultation with other leaders), implements, and reports on measures of performance.
    • Designates and advises PAIR staff who support smaller-scale planning efforts.

Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Knowledge of university operations and finance.
  • Knowledge of university recruiting and retention processes.
  • Knowledge of external factors impacting universities, such as demographics, economic factors.
  • Knowledge of Banner; experience in extracting, organizing, and analyzing data.

Required Experience:

Baccalaureate degree in a quantitative science, statistics, or mathematics.

Master’s degree in a field related to data analysis, planning or management, or equivalent experience.

Minimum five years’ experience as a Chief IR Officer for a research university or equivalent organization.

Typical Education or Training:

Baccalaureate degree in a quantitative science, statistics, or mathematics.

Master’s degree in a field related to data analysis, planning or management, or equivalent experience.

Pursuant to University Regulation 04.07.020, new employees of the University are employed in an at-will probationary status for the first six months of employment. During the probationary period, employment may be terminated for no reason or any reason. Promoted employees also serve a probationary period with limited rights of retreat.
