The University of Alaska is seeking a candidate to join our OIT Systems Engineering Team. Our mission is to protect, provide for, and progress the software and systems behind many of the University of Alaska's services. Like many system admins, we keep important, critical systems up and running despite bandwidth outages and configuration errors. However, the team also develops new products including, full-stack web applications, simulators, distributed data migrations, and next-gen monitoring to name a few.
Not only do we have fun projects like that, but our regular workday involves a lot of DevOp practices and Lean IT processes. We also manage thousands of computers (all University-owned computers, laptops, and tablets), package our own installers, manage the licensing for University owned software, as well as the servers and infrastructure for many of the University's services.
15 Project Management & Strategic Planning--
Serve as an subject matter expert or project lead for system operation upgrades and changes. Consults with and advises unit/department staff of complex problems,
innovative approaches and new technologies. Responsible to conceptualize more
efficient enterprise level desktop management solutions, design and implement the solution, mentor and train staff and support staff in IT operations and maintenance. Responsible for the installation, configuration, maintenance of server platforms. Plan and coordinate system hardware and software for servers using the Unix/Lìnux/Mac/Wìndows Server operating systems. Systems support of various enterprise and MAU specific applications. Responsible to analyze/repair, using established policies/procedures and independently researched analysis/procedures, any issues noted by customers or via maintenance that would result in a system outage or non-use of systems/applications. Independently identifies risks and opportunities with no pre-existing processes or resolutions and drafts projects or policies for higher level approval. Implements enterprise grade solutions requiring expert programing, analysis and communications across multiple University campuses consisting of varying network topologies and user groups. Identifies and implements previously unknown security remediations and hardening to limit University liabilities across network communications and University digital data repositories with little or no direction. Perform technician information systems tasks requiring expertise and/or specialized knowledge in both information systems and non-information systems technical disciplines, including utilization of standard procedures/policies and non-standard procedures. Responsible to ensure security, account maintenance practices, job assignments are conducted in a timely manner. documentation, publications and organization policy, ensuring new applications are documented prior to deployment. Updating documentation regarding network drawings, system updates, application updates and known issues for supported systems and multi-
layered applications. Documentation will often define and/or change operations for technical staff throughout the University System. Responsible for the design, installation, configuration, and maintenance of systems
crucial to supporting thousands of endpoint devices, such as Active Directory, Systems Center Suite, WSUS, ASUS, Windows Deployment Services, VMWare ESX server farm infrastructure, enterprise antivirus applications, and JAMF Software''s Casper Suite. Also serves as lead engineer on said systems directing policy and procedures utilized by IT staff on systems. Makes recommendations regarding training and equipment needed for system enhancements. Maintains security of computer identifications and/or passwords that control access for the entirety of the University’s user base. Coordinates, and implements security measures to safeguard information in computer against accidental or unauthorized modification, destruction, or disclosure; regulates access to computer data files, monitors data file use, and updates security files. Monitors system logs and intrusion software for attempted intrusions, reports any identified attempts to supervisor. Performs forensic investigation on any compromised systems and provides results to security officer. Serve as the subject matter expert for scripting on Unix/Linux/Mac/Windows server/desktop environment utilizing ASP, VBScript, Power Shell, and Batch or applicable versions of Perl to enhance system productivity. MS Certified Systems Engineer preferred.
MS SCCM certification preferred
Certified JSS Administrator preferred
Service management certification required, advanced service management certification preferred

Extensive knowledge of Windows Operating Systems, 7,8,2008R2,2012. Expert knowledge of MAC OS; Unix. Knowledge of networking protocols and procedures, intermediate level. Windows NT and Network Administration. Programming knowledge for integration of multi-layered applications and specialized applications. Ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel effectively. Ability to work at the enterprise level.
