Live-in Student Position (Student Assistant A)
The Department of Residence Life is actively recruiting for potential openings for the Fall 2018-Spring 2019 academic year. Positions include: Resident Advisor (RA), and Peer Academic & Wellness (PAW) Leader. Applicants will be considered for each of the available placements and successful candidates will be placed accordingly should openings become available.
The Department of Residence Life supports on-campus housing for 600+ residents. Our program provides leadership training, experiential learning, awareness of diverse lifestyles and cultures, co-curricular programs and actives (educational and social), and behavioral accountability. Residence Life’s student development approach focuses on enriching each student’s higher education experience by delivering high quality, student-centered programs and services.
Working as a live-in student staff member is an enjoyable and challenging experience, and provides opportunities to gain marketable skills in human relations, customer service, time management, business writing, and team building that few other on-campus positions offer.
These are live-in positions, meaning that to be considered, applicants must plan to reside on campus in UAA's on-campus living community for the duration of employment. Live-in student staff are assigned to live in one of UAA's suite-style residence hall or apartment communities and serve as a resource to residential students, with a full academic year commitment.
To be eligible for this student position, candidates must:
- Be admitted and enrolled in a University of Alaska system in a degree-program with a minimum of twelve (12) credit hours for undergraduate students or six (6) credit hours for graduate students during regular semesters of employment; or
- For employment between semesters, be admitted in a degree-seeking program, and demonstrate plans to enroll for twelve (12) or more credit hours for undergraduate students or six (6) or more credit hours for graduate students in the next regular semester; and
- Have at least a 2.50 cumulative grade point average (GPA); satisfactory term grade point average (2.50 or above) or approval from the MAU Senior Student Services officer or their designee, and maintain successful academic progress.
- Students enrolled in non-traditional programs of study will be considered eligible for student employment with the approval of the Senior Student Services officer.
- An applicant must provide evidence of enrollment as outlines above to substantiate employment eligibility.
- Be in good disciplinary standing at the time of appointment and must remain in good disciplinary standing throughout the duration of employment. Should the Department of Residence Life student employee be placed on disciplinary probation, the individual will no longer be eligible for employment within the department.
- Position reappointment from fall to spring semesters is contingent upon the following: academic eligibility, successful progress toward degree completion, performance evaluation, and judicial standing.
NOTICE: Students must maintain enrollment and regular attendance for a minimum of at least 6 undergraduate credit hours or 6 graduate credit hours to be exempt from FICA (Social Security and Medicare) tax. A credit hour load below the minimum required for full-time student status will require
the withholding of FICA tax (non-resident aliens on an appropriate visa who meet student employment criteria will continue to be exempt from FICA regardless of credit hour load). While in a student position, a student cannot hold any other type of simultaneous employment with the university.
As live-in, paraprofessional staff members, successful candidates must posses, and be able to demonstrate, the following:
- A willingness to learn and teach
- The ability to be innovative, imaginative, and motivating.
- The ability to work effectively with others as part of a diverse team.
- Previous experience working in an environment that requires public contact.
- A sense of responsibility and a strong work ethic.
- Residence Advisors must be available and visible to residents.
- Peer Academic & Wellness Leaders must be available to residents outside of desk hours for continued outreach, and must possess a desire to work and live with first-year students.
Preference will be given to qualified applicants who also are eligible for Federal Work Study as a form of financial aid. Successful applicants will have some experience living in a residential campus community and/or familiarity with student leadership in a university setting.
TYPICAL EDUCATION OR TRAINING:
Residence Life student staff are required to adhere to the following deadlines and attend and participate in the following training and staff development activities, which are provided as part of employment:
- All regularly scheduled staff meetings
- Monthly staff development sessions.
- Involvement in one departmental collateral committee
- Individual meetings with supervisor as scheduled
- Mandatory fall (August 12-22, 2018) and mid-year training (January 9-11, 2019)
- Mandatory Staff Training and Development activities are mandatory. Regularly scheduled staff meetings, values cluster meetings and staff development trainings will take place on Sundays, 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. during the academic year.
- Student staff will be encouraged to attend other development/leadership training activities as they become available. Examples include local meetings, conferences, training sessions, local/regional/national student leadership conferences, etc.
RESIDENT ADVISOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
The RA’s commitment is through May 7, 2019 at 5pm. Attendance at all training sessions is required.
- Assigned to live in one of UAA’s residential communities and serve as a resource to residents.
- Abide by the Wellness Initiative for designated living areas, as stated in the Guide to On-Campus Living.
- Facilitate Welcome Week programs (fall and spring).
- Engage interaction among residents, idea sharing, and community activity participation.
- Host social and educational activities, plan floor/building activities, provide individual advising, and assist in general community management.
- Serve as a role model and mentor to residents and explain, confront and report violations of the Student Code of Conduct and University regulations.
- Participate in rotating duty coverage with other members of their staff team. Duty requires that RAs stay in the residential community and be available to respond to emergencies and enact life/safety response system.
- Regular availability and visibility to residents is important. The RA position should have priority after academic-related commitments and before extra curricular activities.
- Support and abide by the UAA Student Code of Conduct and University regulations.
- Attend regularly scheduled staff meetings, staff development meetings, and leadership training.
- Participate in collateral meetings and 1-on-1 supervisor meetings.
- Facilitate housing processes throughout the academic year.
- Create monthly educational and community development bulletin boards.
- Complete requirements of programming model: 3 interactions with each resident.
- Work/report a minimum of one hour per week at a residence hall desk.
- Other duties as assigned.
PEER ACADEMIC & WELLNESS (PAW) LEADER RESPONSIBILITIES:
The PAW Leader’s commitment is through May 6, 2019 at 8pm. Attendance at all training sessions is required.
- Live in one of UAA’s residential communities and serve as a resource to residential students (North, East, West Halls).
- Abide by the Wellness Initiative as stated in the Guide to On-Campus Living for designated living areas.
- Be a positive role model and mentor for all on campus students.
- Collaborate with other student staff members on programming.
- Be available to students outside of programming for continued outreach.
- Support and abide by the UAA Student Code of Conduct and University regulations.
- Be responsible for reporting to supervisor any concerning behaviors in support of resident wellness.
- Provide support for any resident mental health crises or emergency situations that may arise.
- Create bulletin boards providing event and resource information once monthly.
- Provide content for one Facebook posting weekly in the areas of personal growth, diversity & inclusion, alcohol & drug education, wellness initiatives, or academic topics in concert with the Department of Residence Life marketing team.
- Attend regularly scheduled staff meetings, 1-on-1 supervisor meetings, and all staff development & leadership training.
- Serve as the Department of Residence Life’s representative for themed month programming and other initiatives.
- Serve on the PAW Committee to produce 1 reoccurring, community-wide themed program per month
- Participate in collateral meetings with campus partners
- Work/report time for a minimum of one hour per week at a residence hall desk.
- Support residents to become self-advocates for their academic experience and wellness through programming, passive education and 1:1 contacts. Programming requirements are as follows (and at least one of the programs per month must be a late night social program occurring after 10pm on Thursday, Friday or Saturday):
- One (1) diversity & inclusion or personal growth-themed program per month
- One (1) Alcohol, drug or wellness-themed program per month
- Two (2) academic-themed programs per month
- Build community through student engagement and activities while working scheduled hours at hall desks and/or Cama-i Room.
