Position Summary:

The College of Natural Science and Mathematics seeks a skilled, engaging, and highly effective Instructor of Biology to teach 100 and 200 level human anatomy and physiology and microbiology courses at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. This is a one-year appointment with the possibility of renewal for additional years. The expected academic year workload is six courses, including both daytime and evening instruction, and some service responsibilities, beginning Fall 2018.


10Service (10% of workload): Service activities may include science outreach and committee service.Essential
90Teaching (90% of workload): The successful applicant will teach biology courses: BIOL 111X and 112X Human Anatomy and Physiology I and II, and BIOL 240 Beginnings in Microbiology. This position will require a combination of daytime and evening instruction. The expectations with regard to teaching are as follows: • Prepare syllabi consistent with approved UAF Faculty Senate course guidelines; • Work with the department chair, program chair, and whenever possible with previous instructors to construct student learning outcomes appropriate to the course content and level and commensurate with previously offerings of the courses; • Employ best practices and current pedagogical approaches to create an effective and engaging learning experience for students; • Prepare and deliver lectures; • Plan lab activities; • Coordinate lab exercises for courses taught, which will include working with the departmental faculty and staff to order supplies and reserve equipment, and having responsibility for timely lab set-up and break-down of labs; • Instruct, supervise, and coordinate the activities of graduate teaching assistants and lab technicians for the courses as needed; • Evaluate student learning using formative and summative assessments and provide regular and timely feedback to students on their learning; • Hold weekly office hours and respond to student requests for assistance in an appropriate and timely manner; • Complete all required training and remain current in safety requirements for labs. Ensure that TAs and students are properly trained with regard to safety and waste disposal and follow safety guidelines. Working with departmental faculty and staff, identify additional training needs and arrange for training.Essential

The position requires a master's or Ph.D. degree in biology or a closely related field and successful experience teaching biology in a face-to-face setting at the undergraduate level. The successful candidate must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a demonstrated ability to work with others in a collegial atmosphere focused on student success. Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated success at teaching using current educational pedagogy.
