Position Summary:

As one of the leaders of NASA ESDIS's investigation of Cloud technologies, ASF is well positioned to explore new technologies and opportunities. ASF’s current archive volume is 2.5PB and is projected to exceed 100PB with the launch of several new SAR missions in the next 5 years. With significant new NASA missions and larger scale storage solutions on the horizon, the product owner acts as a mini-CEO of their projects, defining priorities and clarifying tactical goals. We are looking for two product owners with a strong engineering or GIS background to drive new projects that set the standard for remote sensing data discovery.

Duties:

5Data Production: Design, implement and maintain database management systems and report data production success. Develop and maintain statistics to quantify satellite acquisition or data production success/failure rates. Report statistics to management and external funding agencies at regular intervals. Analyze data production failures to determine cause. Recommend alternate processing options or changes to the production system to improve success rate of data products. Document causes of failure and the resolution of those failures.Essential
5Project Evaluation: Evaluate scientific projects in diverse disciplines. Determine appropriate applications of satellite data to meet research goal. Consult with both internal and external researchers and staff regarding ASF capabilities and procedures and other DAAC holdings on behalf of the users. Respond to user inquiries regarding available earth science data. Produce maps and reports detailing geographic area of interest compared to satellite coverage availability.Essential
5Project Support: Provide coordination of customer and technical administrative support including monitoring progress of the Project Office, recommending changes to the project process, responding to agency requests for documentation. Involves using multiple computer platforms, i.e. Unix, PC, etc.Essential
5User Support: Consult with both internal and external researchers and staff regarding ASF capabilities and procedures and other DAAC holdings on behalf of the users. Respond to user inquiries regarding available earth science data. Instruct new and existing ASF SAR data users on operation of multiple remote sensing database systems. Introduce system to new users; provide continued support for existing users.Essential
80Product Ownership: Act as the key stakeholder for multiple projects. Have an overall vision for the goals and outcomes of a project and its products, and convey that vision to the development team when appropriate. Prioritize the backlog of product features in order of highest return on investment and internal dependencies. Act as the representative for the product or project to the organization and to external entities. Report status of the product at all points in the product life cycle.Essential

You enjoy working closely with a team composed of scrum masters, software developers, operations engineers, and quality assurance engineers

You can see the bigger picture of the goals of the product feature but are still able to focus on incremental progress and sprint delivery

In this role you will need to:

Understand, promote, and distill strategic goals into tactical roadmap for project areas

Communicate project team goals to management as well as project needs and roadmap

Create epics and user stories from consultation with stakeholders, and circle back during and after each sprint to revise features and goals

Prioritize the backlog for each project, and work with the team to pull in just enough to each sprint to achieve tactical goals and iterative progress to strategic goals, following Lean Startup methodology of Must Haves, Should Haves, and Nice To Haves.

Effectively groom backlog during sprints and develop follow-on sprint based on priorities

Develop high level diagrams of systems and user level documentation of new features

Assist the scrum team in every capacity – assist with testing, writing documentation, etc. – do what it takes to help the team get projects across the line

Learn about remote sensing products and their quality attributes

Develop and report on metrics including but not limited to user behavior, new product ingest and distribution statistics, and scrum team burndown

Lead sprint planning meetings, daily scrum meetings, and in retrospective team meetings with scrum master

Independently interested in cloud technology and/or remote sensing

Salary Information:

This position is a full-time, exempt, term-funded, Grade 81 with salary commensurate with experience

Pursuant to University Regulation 04.07.020, new employees of the University are employed in an at-will probationary status for the first six months of employment.   During the probationary period, employment may be terminated for no reason or any reason.  Promoted employees also serve a probationary period with limited rights of retreat.

Term Positions:

This position is a term-funded position through June 30, 2018, and is reviewed annually for contract renewal at the University's discretion.
