Position Summary:

The Department of Humanities at the University of Alaska Southeast invites applications for a faculty member of Northwest Coast Native Arts. This will be a three-year, term appointment, at a rank (instructor, assistant professor or associate professor) commensurate with academic experience—applicants without a college degree can apply as an instructor, and applicants with a terminal degree can apply as an assistant or associate professor.

Duties:

This position is charged with developing and implementing a vibrant Northwest Coast Native Arts program for UAS, with program offerings that align with associate and baccalaureate-level degrees already in place at UAS. This includes curriculum development, student recruitment and retention, and collaboration with external partners. UAS currently has active partnerships with Sealaska Heritage Institute and the Institute of American Indian Arts (Santa Fe). In addition, the position will develop program-related spaces and activities that foster a positive and productive artistic atmosphere, to include visiting artists, an artist in residence program, and studio spaces.Essential

The successful candidate must show potential for, or evidence of: demonstrated ability in the creation of Northwest Coast Native Art, an active agenda or strong publication record, and demonstrated extensive study in Indigenous knowledge systems and organizations. The successful candidate must also show potential for, or evidence of: a commitment to teaching excellence, the ability to develop art programs and curriculum, and an understanding of decolonizing institutions through a re-centering of Indigenous knowledge systems.
