Position Summary:

This is the Staff Photographer position at The Northern Light, the student newspaper at the University of Alaska Anchorage.

Duties:

Job Posting Summary: Staff Photographers are responsible for photographing a variety of events both on and off campus. Photographer should have interest in news, features, arts, and sports photography. They need to possess an eye for what's news worthy and interesting. Photographers should be able to take quality photos before processing and know how to resize, crop, and color correct photos in Adobe Photoshop. Photographers must also have an understanding of photojournalism ethics. Photographers need to be able to write cutlines and be willing to talk to people to get as much information as possible for the cutline. 
The Northern Light is a weekly University of Alaska Anchorage student publication, funded by both media fees and advertising sales. The paper is published most Tuesdays during the school year and twice monthly during the summer. The Northern Light also updates web content most weeks throughout the year. The Northern Light is distributed throughout the UAA campus and the Anchorage community. Total distribution is 2,500 copies weekly during the spring and fall semesters and 2,000 copies once a month during the summer. 
This is a labor pool position and applicants will be hired based upon department need.  


Knowledge, skills and abilities required for this position: Applicant must demonstrate creative ability and proficiency in news, features, and sports photography; be proficient at sizing, cropping, and color correcting digital photographs using Adobe Photoshop; be able to meet deadlines; able to work collaboratively with reporters to get story-based photos and gather cutline information; able to work with minimal supervision with flexible hours; and have knowledge of media laws and ethics. 


Typical education or training required for this position: Classes in photography or related/relevant experience in photography


Length of time and type of experience required for this position: To be eligible for student employment, an applicant must: 
a. Be enrolled in the University of Alaska system with a minimum of six credit hours in the current semester of employment; or 
b. Have been enrolled the preceding semester for six or more credit hours and demonstrate plans to enroll for six or more credit hours in the next semester for employment between semesters; and 
c. Have at least a 2.0 cumulative grade point average (GPA), be in good academic standing, or approval from the MAU Senior Student Services officer or his/her designee. 
d. Students enrolled in non-traditional programs of study will be considered eligible for student employment with the approval of the Senior Student Services officer. 
e. An applicant must provide evidence of enrollment as outlined above to substantiate employment eligibility.

Duties: Photographers must take photos as assigned by photo editor or other editor on deadline; provide digital camera and accessories to perform job requirements on flexible schedule; take creative photographs on and off campus for assigned stories or as story opportunities present themselves; maintain professional and ethical standards while getting photos that best serve the story; assist with maintenance of photo file system; attend meetings as assigned by editors; and compose complete cutlines for every photo. Be receptive to appropriate feedback regarding work for the newspaper as well as other duties as assigned. The photographers report to the Photo Editor.
