Position Summary:

The SSS Department is looking for a Director to join it's team! Student Support Services is a program funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education with the goal of graduating students who commonly are at-risk of not succeeding in college.


10Budget: Manage budget of over $400k for department from fund 1 and fund 3 sources. Approve and monitor purchases in accordance with grant and university policies. Ensure appropriate time and effort and monitor allowable charges.Essential
10Recordkeeping and Reporting: Prepare all required reports including grant renewal. Maintain required electronic and paper records. Submit annual Department of Education Annual Performance Report (APR) and other reports requested by DOE or by the Vice Provost. Research and collect data to analyze program usage, academic progress and success, progress toward grant objectives, evaluate programming and other reports as requested.Essential
15Create, Develop and Evaluate Program Components: Understand and interpret the department''s grant and grant objectives and make policy decisions consistent with regulations and legislation. Run SSS program in compliance with approved grant application and applicable regulations and legislation. Ensure the program earns prior-year experience points annually from DOE. Manage and facilitate the following programmatic components in compliance with the successful grant award. These include: - participant selection - acceptance and retention policies - comprehensive advising - social and cultural engagement - tutorial services - DEVS 110 College Success Skills - study skills instruction - media loan - scholarship disbursement - additional support services - graduate school and career preparation - financial and economic literacy and FAFSA completion - research , mentoring, internship and job shadow opportunities Determine and implement methodology for assessing needs of students, development of appropriate services to meet those needs and conduct regular evaluation of services provided to assess effectiveness and improve programs. Establish advising expectations and troubleshoot complex student situations. Ensure the program meets the required number of 280 program participants and maintain appropriate eligibility quotas. Differentiate between grant and state funded students in departmental records. Oversee and co-lead Emerging Scholars Academy summer bridge program for 15 local, incoming freshmen. Collaborate with academic departments to arrange instructors and GER courses at no cost to students. Work with Vice Provost and others involved in Comprehensive Advising. Includes providing updates and reports and collaborating on initiatives designed to improve student success.Essential
15Marketing and Outreach: Conduct public relations both on and off campus. Network with campus programs and offices, particularly retention programs. Market SSS program to departments and prospective students. Manage student recruitment. Promote the SSS program through presentations to University departments, at various orientations, Faculty Senate, through participation in open houses or University fairs, promotion with articles and advertisements in campus publications, electronic and print signage, developing flyers and brochures for campus distribution and online. Plan and implement special events, service and cultural activities and the annual TRiO Day Celebration. Maintain alumni records and contact through newsletter and outreach. Seek additional funding for the program through donations and outside funding sources. Meet with peer Directors, exchanging in-service staff trainings and presentations. Attend campus meetings relevant to retention and to program activities, and collaborate with faculty and departments on student retention. Coordinate and share information with other departments involved with tutoring and academic support. Develop collaborations among departments with similar missions and functions. Advocate for TRiO student issues on campus and with committee participation.Essential
25Comprehensive Advising: Advise and counsel 40 plus SSS students, including intakes, case management, comprehensive advising. Interview new program participants, evaluate their eligibility for services--including qualification under grant criteria and likelihood for academic success and approve or deny acceptance into the program in accordance with program policy. Synthesize students'' personal circumstances and individual needs to promote academic success. Assign program services to meet social and academic needs. Engage in academic case management. Assist advisees with major selection, course scheduling, identifying sources for and obtaining financial aid, employment, social supports, graduate school and relevant referrals using Banner, DegreeWorks and UAOnline. Use test scores, academic record and judgment when determining course placement and semester load. Explain University policies, financial aid rules and creation of graduation plans to ensure a timely graduation. Monitor program participants'' academic progress, maintain contact and keep written and electronic records of the counseling and advising sessions. Coordinate regular personal interaction and enforce student accountability through written contracts. Identify, contact and establish plan of action for struggling or failing students. Advocate for students on academic issues, to include but not limited to authorizations for appeals for financial aid, academic probation and academic disqualification. Refer students to appropriate legal and social resources for complex problems. Identify the need for improved or additional services and develop retention strategies.Essential
25Personnel Coordination and Supervision: Train, evaluate, performance manage and supervise for 5 direct subordinates and 15-17 indirect subordinates. Ensure subordinates meet university training requirements. Complete required HR trainings. Provide professional development opportunities.Essential


  • Master's Degree in Education, Counseling, Social Work, or other relevant field, and three years experience with program management in an educational setting. TRiO and/or college success curriculum experience. Commitment to multicultural educational, social justice and educational opportunity for disadvantaged students.
  • Three years experience with case management, mentoring and academic advising and leading others in these functions.
  • Excellent writing and speaking skills.
  • Administrative skills: Management, leadership, and supervision skills, including organization, prioritizing, communication and planning abilities.
  • Grant Management skills: Following regulations, writing reports and evaluation of program.
  • Fiscal Management skills: Ability to oversee budget and provide fiscal accountability and write proposals.

Required Experience:

Three years experience teaching at the University level and/or managing educational programs for at-risk students.

Typical Education or Training:

Master's Degree in appropriate field and four years experience in education. Training necessary to provide skills listed above.

This position is a term-funded position and is reviewed annually for contract renewal at the University's discretion.
