The First Year Experience program at UAS is actively looking to hire a student assistant, Student C position.
The department expects to employ a student at approximately 10 hours per week throughout the Spring 2017 semester, with the option to renew employment at the department's discretion in May 2017 for a May 2017 - May 2018 term.
This position’s benefits include provided housing at no cost during summer employment months, as well hourly wages available for administrative tasks at $10.50/hr.

The First Year Experience (FYE) Assistant is an integral component of the Campus Life team that works closely with First Year Experience, Residence Life, and Student Activities staff members to successfully run several student centered programs, including New Student Orientation, the Alaska Leadership Initiative, and the Power and Privilege Symposium. This position requires both strong administrative and interpersonal skills.
This position is structured as a one-year term position with possible renewal, starting each May. Ideal candidates will begin training in May, work 40 hours/week over the course of the Summer, and then work up to 20 hours a week during the Academic Year. Mid-year hires will complete the term (ending in April of each year) with an option to renew, if needed by the department.
Though training is largely provided, we do expect some of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities to be displayed and demonstrated:
Full time (12 credits) student status
Minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA is required with preference given to candidates with a 2.5 cumulative GPA
May not be on disciplinary probation
Effective interpersonal skills
Ability to work as a member of a staff team
Demonstrated leadership and/or peer helping skills
Preference given to candidates with experience in university leadership involvement Preference give to candidates with cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher
Position duties and requirements include the following:
Participate in training sessions, in-services, and regular meetings with supervisor.
Complete administrative tasks in preparation for New Student Orientation, the Alaska Leadership Initiative, and the Power and Privilege Symposium. This might include tracking sign-ups, communicating with students, tracking attendance, and communicating with faculty, staff, and community members.
For Spring 2017, work 10 hours a week in John R Pugh Hall, in proximity to the FYE Advisor, to assist with the Alaska Leadership Initiative, planning for New Student Orientation, and other administrative duties.
(If renewed) During summer months, work 40 hours a week in John R Pugh Hall, in proximity to the FYE Advisor, to assist with ongoing FYE needs and academic year prep.
(If renewed) During the academic year, work up to 15 hours a week to coordinate the Alaska Leadership Initiative, serve as volunteer coordinator for the UAS Power and Privilege Symposium, and plan New Student Orientation.
During the academic year, be present at each meeting of the Alaska Leadership Initiative, the Power and Privilege Symposium, and New Student Orientation as a student assistant and leader.
Assist the FYE Advisor and Student Activities Coordinator with ongoing assessment of FYE programs and services.
Maintain the First Year Experience social media presence on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram
This position’s benefits include an $10.50 hourly wage and provided housing at no cost during summer months of employment.
