The Writing Center is seeking a student writing tutor to work with UAS students. The job requires strong writing skills and the ability to coach students through all stages of the writing process. A student tutor position is a great opportunity to improve mentoring skills, learn about tutoring/teaching strategies, and gain professional work experience. Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis and filled as positions become available.
100 Tutor in one-on-one or group settings without supervision; Coach students to become stronger writers; Have a strong understanding of essay organization, sentence structure, and grammar and punctuation rules. Maintain records of each student''s tutoring session. Carry out other Writing Center tasks and projects at the request of the writing specialist; Create and maintain an inviting environment. Completion of/or present enrollment in English 211 and 212 Average grade of "B" or better previous English courses.
Knowledge of basic academic course content and tutoring strategies required.
Must have ability to recognize various learning styles, communicate effectively with students and faculty, and be highly responsible and organized.
Ability to exercise independent judgement and decision-making.
Student Employment Requirements
Must be a UAS student enrolled in a minimum of six credit hours throughout employment duration.
Maintain a 2.0 cumulative GPA.
All applications must include a writing sample. This sample may be from your previous course work and can be any type of writing. Choose something that highlights your strengths as a writer.
This is a Student Assistant C position, $10.50/hourly, with exceptional placement dependent on experience.

NOTICE: Students must maintain enrollment and regular attendance for a minimum of at least 6 undergraduate credit hours or 6 graduate credit hours to be exempt from FICA (Social Security and Medicare) tax. A credit hour load below the minimum required for full-time student status will require the withholding of FICA tax (non-resident aliens on an appropriate visa who meet student employment criteria will continue to be exempt from FICA regardless of credit hour load). While in a student position, a student cannot hold any other type of simultaneous employment with the university.
