The University of Alaska Southeast in Juneau is seeking applicants to fill a Math & Testing Specialist position. Under the supervision of the Library Director and as part of the broader Learning Center team this position provides: Mathematics and statistics tutoring, back up support for the Testing Supervisor, and shares responsibility in day to day Learning Center operations. 15 In collaboration with the Manager of Math Operations and the Testing Supervisor, help track usage and assess effectiveness of Learning Center programs including the assessment of student learning outcomes. Develop and implement quality assurance processes. Gather feedback on satisfaction with Learning Center services. Review trends and national standards in academic support to ensure quality math tutoring is provided to a broad range of students. Essential
15 In collaboration with the Manager of Math Operations, help promote Learning Center services to the campus community. Spearhead and/or collaborate on special initiatives with other university departments including advising and academic departments. Maintain contact with, and assist, the Library Director and other staff with special projects, office organizational tasks, etc. as needed. Act as liaison between Math faculty and the Learning Center and attend faculty meetings as a representative of the Learning Center as appropriate. Essential
35 Help coordinate day-to-day Learning Center and Testing Center operations. Create a positive, open, intellectually stimulating environment for students needing subject tutoring or assistance with test taking. Provide back-up support for the Testing Supervisor, including help with administering proctored on-campus & distance education exams, placement tests, standardized professional and academic exams, & new testing initiatives. Help create and maintain Learning Center hours of operation and develop schedules for individual tutors. Collaborate with Manager of Math Operations and Math faculty on recruitment of student math tutors. Help develop and maintain a math tutor training program that includes supervision, ongoing training, and evaluation of student math tutors. Essential
35 Provide quality tutorial services in mathematics and statistics at all levels, especially in preparatory math and in elementary and intermediate algebra. Use individualized strategies and multiple approaches to meet a variety of student needs in individual and group tutoring sessions. Essential
Required Education & Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in mathematics or a related field (or successful completion of a minimum of 16 credits of upper-division math)
One year of tutoring and/or teaching experience in Math/Statistics or a related field
Preferred Education & Experience:
Experience working successfully with people of diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds
Knowledge of different tutoring and teaching strategies for a wide variety of learning styles and needs
Ability and willingness to learn eLearning operations and test proctoring best practices
Effective cross-cultural verbal and written communication skills
Effective management skills to supervisor and train multiple student tutors
Proficient in Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Word, Access, etc.)
Ability to work collaboratively with students, faculty, and staff
Ability and willingness to learn regional placement test cut-scores implementation and interpretation practices
Ability to tutor students in lower and upper division statistics
Knowledge of mathematics software support programs (Maple, Mathematica, etc.) preferred
Knowledge of UAS course catalog and academic programs is preferred
This is a full time (80 hours/biweekly),
Grade 78, 9-month, staff position complete with a full employee benefits package. Following the completion of a six-month probationary period, the incumbent will also receive a tuition waiver benefit for self and dependents.
