Position Summary:

Tutors are hired by the Languages Department each semester (Fall and Spring) to assist students in their studies of American Sign Language, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish. Successful applicants for this position will be placed into a hiring pool for the academic year 2016-17 from which tutors will be hired each semester according to the needs of that semester's schedule.

Duties:

Tutors are hired by the Languages Department each semester (Fall and Spring) to assist students in their studies of American Sign Language, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish. 

Successful applicants for this position will be placed into a hiring pool for the academic year 2017-18 from which tutors will be hired each semester according to the needs of that semester's schedule.  

Successful pool applicants must demonstrate proficiency in the target language and the ability to explain grammatical concepts and provide conversational practice at a level deemed sufficient by the language section or tutor coordinator. 
Attention to detail and timeliness in completion of assigned tasks. Requires effective and timely communication skills.  

Previous experience teaching or tutoring and native or near-native language proficiency or study-abroad experience are preferred.

To be eligible for student employment, an applicant must: 
a) Be enrolled in the University of Alaska system with a minimum of six credit hours in the current semester of employment
b) Have at least a 2.0 cumulative grade point average (GPA) or approval from the MAU Senior Student Services officer or his/her designee. 
c) Students enrolled in programs outside the studies of the respective language and who possess the necessary linguistic skills and qualifications will be considered eligible for student employment with the approval of the Senior Student Services officer. 
d) An applicant must provide evidence of enrollment as outlined above to substantiate employment eligibility.  

Duties may include some or all of the following: assisting students with grammatical and cultural questions as appropriate; providing conversation practice in the target language; providing assistance with written and oral assignments (at the discretion of the instructor); encouraging a supportive environment for the beginning learner to practice his or her skills. Tutors must participate in trainings offered by the Learning Resource Center, as well as the Department of Languages.

Student Assistant C pay rate is $10.50 per hour
