The University Fire Department is an extraordinary program to prepare student fire fighters for careers in fire and emergency services. Students work a full 56-hour per week shift schedule which includes emergency responses, station upkeep, apparatus maintenance, training, and attending college classes. The combination of training, education, and real-world experience has resulted in an impressive placement rate for our alumni. Many of our alumni become top candidates in fire service jobs and often promote to management positions.
The University Fire Department is accepting applications from students committed to preparing for successful careers in firefighting and emergency services. This unique program, based at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, provides college students with the opportunity to pursue a degree while gaining valuable experience working as a firefighter and EMT and earning wages for living expenses. Student employees work a typical 56-hour shift schedule while attending college classes towards degrees such as fire science, para-medicine, and emergency management. The combination of training, education, and real-world experience has placed many of our alumni into careers throughout the United States. Many of our alumni become top candidates in fire service jobs and often promote to management positions.

Starting hourly rate of pay: $9.75
General knowledge sufficient to earn an ACT score of 21 or SAT score of 1450;
Skill and dexterity in the use and manipulation of tools and apparatus used in fighting fires;
Ability to a) analyze situations quickly and objectively and to determine the proper course of action; b) react quickly and calmly under emergency conditions; c) learn and efficiently perform a wide variety of fire fighting duties and emergency medical duties, methods and techniques; d) climb stairs in multiple story buildings carrying heavy tools and equipment; e) perform physically demanding duties such as carrying victims, hoisting equipment using ropes, and using heavy equipment; f) establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by the work; g) climb ladders and work at considerable heights; h) understand and execute complex oral and written instructions quickly; i) perform limited mechanical work involved in maintaining fire fighting and rescue apparatus, equipment and tools; j) work as a part of a team and to exercise independent judgement as required; k) cope with stressful situations firmly, courteously and tactfully, and with respect for the rights of others; l) communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; m) drive or operate large fire vehicles in a safe and efficient manner with appropriate instruction.
- Responds to fire alarms and extinguishes fire;
- Responds to calls for emergency medical services, and renders first aid;
- Responds to and renders assistance in emergency cases;
- Cleans and inspects equipment and apparatus after returning from a fire;
- Inspects equipment and apparatus and notifies superior officer of any defects;
- Makes minor repairs to equipment and apparatus, performs routine preventative maintenance tasks, and keeps records of such action;
- Keeps fire station, equipment and grounds in a clean and orderly condition;
- Participates in training activities and instruction sessions;
- Acquires and retains a thorough knowledge of the response area, including streets, buildings, water supply, unusual hazards and related items;
- Performs various public information or education tasks;
- Enters inspection, training and (on occasion) fire and emergency medical service calls into the records management systems;

Applicant must obtain and submit a Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) certificate issued by the University Fire Department or any approved CPAT testing agency before the closing date;
Applicant must submit with this application and maintain an acceptable criminal history and driving history.
Applicant must be eligible for student employment and be eligible to work over 20 hours per week.
Once hired, student employees must maintain a 2.0 semester/cumulative grade point average (GPA) and be enrolled in a minimum of 12 credit hours of University coursework per regular semester.
Once hired, student employees must be able to obtain and maintain a State of Alaska Division of Forestry Emergency Fire Fighter (EFF) red card, including passing the arduous pack test.

This is a pool position and successful submission of an application does not guarantee employment; successful applicants will be contacted as positions become available. Candidates who have not obtained State of Alaska Firefighter I certification when job openings occur will be passed over and will remain eligible for future job openings.
