Position Summary: The Office of Information Technology (OIT) Data Center Operations is seeking an entry level Computer Operator to join our team providing 24/7 coverage.

OIT Data Center Operations provides 24/7 operation of the Butrovich Computer Facility which hosts mission critical applications such as Banner, UAOnline, Blackboard, Polar Express, and Distance Education. The 12,000 square foot facility incorporates state of the art data center design and provides a home for the University's business computer systems and the Geophysical Institute's Cray and Penguin supercomputers. The Computer Operator is an integral part in ensuring normal operation in this exciting environment.

The successful candidate will take the initiative to continually expand their knowledge in this ever changing environment. This position must assess and manage workloads on multiple computer systems to achieve maximum efficiency to meet customer needs. This is essential during peak load times (i.e. financial month end and biweekly payroll, beginning and ending of semesters). In addition, this position will assess impact on complex processes and schedules in the event of a hardware or software failure and take appropriate action to restore service as soon as possible. Must monitor Network systems and be able to determine appropriate diagnostics and repair action quickly. Intensive problem isolation and solving skills is a daily requirement for this position along with the ability to handle multiple tasks while simultaneously assessing impact on a continuous basis. Requiring broad technical knowledge of hardware and software systems.

 Requirements of the Job:

  • Have a current and valid Alaska Driver's License or able to obtain by date of hire. Needed for offsite transportation of tapes.
  • This position requires working shifts as assigned to cover a 24/7 operational department.

Probationary Period:

Pursuant to University Regulation 04.07.020, new employees of the University are employed in an at-will probationary status for the first six months of employment.  During the probationary period, employment may be terminated for no reason or any reason.  Promoted employees also serve a probationary period with limited rights of retreat.

10Keep online shift logs current and maintain thoroughly detailed online documentation for all computer and environmental systems.Essential
10Maintain security and strict environmental requirements for 15,000 SF facility via access control system, closed circuit TV, mechanical and electrical monitoring. Responsible for the security and integrity of computer facility during shift. Problems must be attended to immediately to prevent interruptions.Essential
10Produce and distribute CD-ROM reports and special forms (payroll checks, W2, 1099 and etc.) using the pressure seal form process. Provide secure environment for production of payroll checks. Archive files for retention.Essential
10Provide after hours Help Desk support. Receive incoming help requests and problem reports; resolve or escalate as appropriate utilizing oncall staff and vendor support when required.Essential
10Provide and monitor backups of data on computer systems. Offsite transportation of system and database backup tapes. Maintain 10,000 volume tape library and offsite storage vault to facilitate disaster recovery.Essential
10Provide resolution and tracking for hardware problems, record occurrence, status and resolution in problem management software. Isolate hardware problems and utilize oncall and vendor support staff resources for problem research and resolution, while assisting with impact control.Essential
20Monitor and operate host computer systems, servers, reel/cartridge tape handlers, printers, robotic tape systems and ensure normal operating conditions on multiple systems. Detect equipment and/or operating system malfunctions and take corrective action.Essential
