Position Summary: The Office of Information Technology (OIT) is recruiting a Systems Engineer in Customer Support Services' Systems Engineering team. Requirements of the Job:
Have a current and valid Alaska Driver's License or able to obtain by date of hire. Needed for travel to various locations on campus using a department vehicle.
This position requires occasional travel to remote sites for periods of two to four weeks at time.
Four years field experience in a complex enterprise level environment.
Typical Education or Training:
Bachelor of Science Degree or higher in Computer Science, or equivalent work experience.
Knowledge, skills and abilities for this position:
Automation Software - Chef, Puppet, or similar
CI/CD Pipelines - Familiarity with Git, and automated testing tools such as Travis-CI, Jenkins, or similar, as well as orchestration of deployments for continuous delivery
Programming Languages - Familiarity with various programming language such as Ruby, Python, Perl, Java, C/C++, and a strong grasp of at least one language
Databases: Understanding of DB design and SQL. NoSQL DB experience a plus but not required
Cloud - track record with AWS preferred, but OpenStack, Google and Azure also of interest
Experience with VMWare vSphere, vCenter Server, Horizon View, and ESXi
Several years experience with Windows Server platforms
Strong understanding of Active Directory
Demonstrated advanced knowledge of computer networking
Ability to identify and resolve complex problems
Knowledge of security best practices and intrusion detection and prevention techniques
Excellent communication skills, both written and oral

Responsible for the design, installation, configuration, and maintenance of systems
crucial to supporting thousands of endpoint devices. Directs and develops configurations, policies, and monitoring solutions that promote efficiency and productivity while ensuring compliance with University standards. Serve as the subject matter expert for scripting on Unix/Linux/Mac/Windows server/desktop environments utilizing a variety of programming languages to enhance system productivity. Work closely with clients and IT team members to understand the departmental stakeholder requirements that drive the analysis and design of quality technical solutions using an agile process.
