Position Summary: The Office of Information Technology (OIT) is recruiting a Systems Engineer in Customer Support Services' Systems Engineering team. Requirements of the Job:

  • Have a current and valid Alaska Driver's License or able to obtain by date of hire. Needed for travel to various locations on campus using a department vehicle.
  • This position requires occasional travel to remote sites for periods of two to four weeks at time.

Required Experience: 

Four years field experience in a complex enterprise level environment.

Typical Education or Training:

Bachelor of Science Degree or higher in Computer Science, or equivalent work experience.

Knowledge, skills and abilities for this position:

  • Automation Software - Chef, Puppet, or similar
  • CI/CD Pipelines - Familiarity with Git, and automated testing tools such as Travis-CI, Jenkins, or similar, as well as orchestration of deployments for continuous delivery
  • Programming Languages - Familiarity with various programming language such as Ruby, Python, Perl, Java, C/C++, and a strong grasp of at least one language
  • Web Development - Strong understanding of full-stack web development. Familiarity with JavaScript, CSS3, HTML5 and various frameworks and libraries. (Django, RAILS, Flask, Phoenix, NodeJS, etc.)
  • Databases: Understanding of DB design and SQL. NoSQL DB experience a plus but not required
  • Cloud - track record with AWS preferred, but OpenStack, Google and Azure also of interest
  • Experience with VMWare vSphere, vCenter Server, Horizon View, and ESXi
  • Several years experience with Windows Server platforms
  • Strong understanding of Active Directory
  • Demonstrated advanced knowledge of computer networking
  • Ability to identify and resolve complex problems
  • Knowledge of security best practices and intrusion detection and prevention techniques
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral

20Application Support - Responsible for the successful operation and management of core applications of the University System. These applications include the University’s web services, email and calendaring, Learning Management System, VDI, Licensing Servers, AntiVirus, and other centrally licensed applications. Develops installers for easy deployment via configuration management platforms and for end user distribution.Essential
20Project Management & Planning - Serve as an subject matter expert or project lead for major system operation upgrades and changes. Consults with and advises unit/department staff of complex problems, innovative approaches and new technologies. Independently identifies risks and opportunities with no pre-existing processes or resolutions and drafts projects or policies for higher level approval. Perform technician information systems tasks requiring expertise and/or specialized knowledge in both information systems and non-information systems technical disciplines, including utilization of standard procedures/policies and non-standard procedures.Essential
25Configuration Management and Architecture Design - Responsible for the design, installation, configuration, and maintenance of systems crucial to supporting thousands of endpoint devices. Directs and develops configurations, policies, and monitoring solutions that promote efficiency and productivity while ensuring compliance with University standards. Serve as the subject matter expert for scripting on Unix/Linux/Mac/Windows server/desktop environments utilizing a variety of programming languages to enhance system productivity. Additionally, performs custom scripting as per customer request or organization need to enhance performance or user experience at the University System scope level.Essential
30Engineering and Development - Work closely with clients and IT team members to understand the departmental stakeholder requirements that drive the analysis and design of quality technical solutions using an agile process. These solutions must be aligned with University and IT strategies and compliant with architectural standards. Involved in the full life cycle of an application. Responsible for the design and implementation of applications’ build, release, deployment, and configuration activities, including working with internal business partners to gather requirements, prototyping, architecting, implementing/updating solutions, building and executing test plans, performing quality reviews, managing operations, and triaging and fixing operational issues. Must be able to adjust to constant business change; such as new requirements, evolving goals and strategies, and emerging technologies. Require the ability to interact, develop, engineer, and communicate collaboratively at the highest technical levels with clients, vendors, partners, and all levels of University staff.Essential
5Documentation and Communication - Responsible to develop and edit computer related technical and administrative documentation, publications and organization policy, ensuring new applications are documented prior to deployment. Updating documentation regarding network drawings, system updates, application updates and known issues for supported systems and multi- layered applications. Documentation will often define and/or change operations for technical staff throughout the University System. Communicates documentation with other University of Alaska System staff in support of the enterprise and may be responsible for marketing documentation as needed.Essential
