Position Summary: Come join an award winning program at ANSEP. We are recruiting for Lead Youth Peer Mentors.

Our objective is to effect systemic change in the hiring patterns of Alaska Natives in science and engineering professions.  We begin with students in the sixth grade and prepare them socially and academically to be hyper-advanced when they arrive at the University for science and engineering degrees. Once at the University, ANSEP provides a welcoming environment designed to foster success.  ANSEP is a partnership between industry, state and federal agencies, Native organizations, philanthropic organizations, K12 school districts, and the University of Alaska. We raise the bar for student expectations and measure programmatic effectiveness using academic outcomes. ANSEP student performance exceeds state and national averages at each academic level.  Every successful ANSEP pre-college student is on track to earn the Alaska Performance Scholarship.  There are more than 2,000 ANSEP students in the ANSEP pipeline.  We are rapidly increasing the number of ANSEP students academically and socially prepared for science and engineering BS degrees prior to high school graduation.  ANSEP is the most successful and cost effective STEM program in the nation.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Lead Program Activities: Assists ANSEP Summer Directors and Regional Directors and other ANSEP staff with planning, organizing, coordinating, preparing, and leading daily activities for ANSEP components. Works with district chaperones to ensure student and program needs are met. At the direction of the Summer Directors and Regional Directors, oversee mailings to applicants/families, acceptance letters, and other communications. Perform data entry and tracking for ANSEP components. Other tasks as assigned.

  • Lead and Train YPMs: Lead and help train ANSEP Youth Peer Mentors. Delegate tasks as-needed. Ensure that staffing levels are appropriate for planned activities. Is available for selected on-call hours during program dates. Ensure that ANSEP component students are accounted for, and under appropriate supervision, in accordance with ANSEP handbook and policies and procedures. Ensure that ANSEP students are safe and manage risk through training and adhering to ANSEP risk reduction policies. Assist with dormitory hall management and set-up.

  • Manage Students: Manage and schedule all special events and activities both on and off UAA campus. Work with ANSEP Fiscal Office on travel needs. Assist with building management and set-up tasks for ANSEP components. Organize events for ANSEP components to include facility set up, entertainment, food and communications with families regarding events and celebrations.

Requirements:

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Exceptional interpersonal and customer service skills with ability to work with all levels; well-developed problem solving skills; demonstrated knowledge of general office procedures, equipment, and records maintenance. Strong, broad-based computer proficiency. Ability to work independently, exercise good judgement and discretion and maintain confidentiality. Supervisory and leadership skills. Excellent administrative procedures, practices and time management skills. A Strong attention to organization, detail and follow-through. Excellent proofreading skills. Ability to work independently with initiative. Experience in general office and administrative support procedures. Experience with pre-college residential programs. Ability to work on-call hours.

Education and Experience:

Minimum of 30 University credits successfully completed. One year of previous administrative experience. One year of previous residential program experience.

Minimum Starting Hourly Salary: $19.29
