Position Summary:

We are currently accepting applications for a temporary Maintenance Technician. The High-Frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP) is the world's most capable high-power, high-frequency transmitter for the study of ionospheric. The operation of the research facility was transferred from the United States Air Force to the University of Alaska Fairbanks in August 2015, allowing the Geophysical Insitute to continue to operate the facility as an open international observatory for space physics and radio science.

Job Overview:

At the Geophysical Institute, Animal Resources Center, and the Office of the Vice Chancellor, the breadth of our research is reflected by our disciplinary-based, functional groupings of faculty and research staff. These research divisions reflect the range and diversity of our active scientific research projects.  Also, we supply researchers all over the world with data and support for essential scientific research through our many facilities. A large part of our success is attributable to the expert services of our support staff. These groups include design services, operations, business, human resources, proposal office and public information. As a temporary employee, you would contribute to the research and support of researchers through a variety of positions.

Essential Duties:

We are currently accepting applications for a temporary Maintenance Technician.  Applications must include a resume, cover letter, and three (3) professional references.


The High-Frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP) is the world's most capable high-power, high-frequency transmitter for the study of the ionosphere. The operation of the research facility was transferred from the United States Air Force to the University of Alaska Fairbanks in August 2015, allowing the Geophysical Insitute to continue to operate the facility as an open international observatory for space physics and radio science. This position will:

  • Assist with the installation, maintenance, and repair of site plumbing, heating, and air conditioning systems.
  • Monitor Site fuel supply and coordinate fuel deliveries.
  • Assist with transporting and lifting transmitter field equipment to/from shelters and disassembling/assembling IRI shelter equipment, as directed.
  • Operate and maintain University furnished tools and equipment including, but not limited to, hand tools, power tools, welding equipment, forklift, snow machines, all-terrain vehicles, and vehicles.
  • Serve as an expeditor for the facility if required.
  • Plow, shovel and use a snowblower to remove snow from facility roadways and walking paths.
  • Perform building maintenance functions including, but not limited to, light bulb replacement, painting, carpentry, cleaning of work areas and the operations center including floors and trash removal.
  • Participate in weekly safety meetings and record keeping.
  • Assist the site Safety Officer with maintaining site safety equipment and systems.
  • Assist with power plant maintenance and repair work.
  • Perform antenna field maintenance including, but not limited to, gate repair and maintenance, fence repair and maintenance, transmitter shelter leveling, climber ground support, guy repair, ground screen repair, messenger wire repair, cable installation or repair, and antenna guy tensioning

Required Skills and Experience:

Be able to operate or be able to assist in the operation and monitoring of a highly automated 13 MW/16.25 MVA diesel electric plant. Assist with transmitter field start-up. Assist with transmitter and facility tower troubleshooting   and repair.  Assist with the installation, maintenance, and repair of site plumbing. heating, and air conditioning systems. Must be able to perform antenna field maintenance including, but not limited to, gate repair and maintenance, fence repair and maintenance, transmitter shelter leveling, climber ground support, guy repair, ground screen repair, messenger wire repair, cable installation or repair, and antenna guy tensioning. Must be able to weld and fabricate both permanent and semi-permanent apparatus.

Salary is commensurate with experience and will include an 11% Geographic Differential.
